Demoscene Coders Reverse-Engineer Legendary YM2612 Direct PCM Sound Driver

Mega Drive demoscene engineers have finalized an exhaustive reverse-engineering effort analyzing the proprietary Z80 audio driver used in Streets of Rage 2 and Shinobi III.

The open-source driver circumvents historic bus-contention bottlenecks on the Sega architecture, interleaving bank-switched PCM sample cycles to deliver pristine 32 kHz 9-bit digital playback without DAC buzz.

Complete assembly sources, cycle-accurate timing documentation, and homebrew SDK templates have been made publicly available under the MIT license.
