Sony Celebrates 30 Years of PlayStation: Milestones & Legacy

On December 3, 1994, the original PlayStation hit retail shelves across Japan. Born from the ashes of a collapsed contract with Nintendo to build a CD add-on for the Super Famicom, Ken Kutaragi's grey console dramatically restructured global entertainment economics.

Sony boldly wagered on dedicated 3D geometry hardware and low-cost CD-ROM optical media while competitors remained hesitant. The sheer storage capacity allowed creators to introduce full-motion video, high-fidelity Red Book audio, and expansive multi-disc narratives.

Backed by developer-friendly C-language APIs, the PlayStation library hosted defining cultural touchstones: Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Wipeout, Gran Turismo, and Tekken.

To honor 30 years of PlayStation, Sony launched commemorative retrospective exhibits showcasing original hardware schematics and interviews with audio engineer Takafumi Fujisawa on creating the iconic chime.
