The 1986 arcade classic Wonder Boy has arrived on Sega Mega Drive and Commodore Amiga in a port by developer ShinobiZ. This native 68000 assembly rewrite recreates the original Sega System 1 arcade program logic with assistance from AI. Players take control of Tom-Tom and race through eight distinct areas and 32 rounds to save his kidnapped girlfriend, Tanya, from the evil King. As in the arcade game, vitality drains continuously, so players must run, leap onto skateboards and throw stone axes while gathering fruit. Completionists can search for all 28 hidden dolls to unlock a secret eighth area.

The creator says both ports run at full arcade speed, with authentic enemy behaviour, collision detection and scoring. Each version has music and sound effects tailored to its hardware, using the Mega Drive’s dedicated sound chips and the Amiga’s Paula chip. The package also includes a complete demo mode, free play, turn-taking multiplayer and high-score saving to cartridge memory or floppy disk. An arcade settings menu offers options such as starting lives and difficulty, while automatic PAL and NTSC detection is included.

• Players who would rather avoid AI-assisted games can try the Amiga version released by Acidbottle through the Scorpion Engine in 2023.

System requirements

• Mega Drive: Any PAL or NTSC Mega Drive or Genesis, or an emulator such as Genesis Plus GX, BlastEm or MAME.

• Amiga: An OCS/ECS Amiga with Kickstart 1.3 or later and 1 MB of memory (512 KB chip + 512 KB), or an AGA Amiga such as the A1200 or A4000 for enhanced mode. The game boots from floppy, can be started from Workbench or installed on a hard disk. Supported emulators include WinUAE and FS-UAE.
